Collaroy Beach. This area was originally part of Narrabeen, but was renamed after the S.S. Collaroy ran aground on the beach in 1881 during a storm. It was refloated and later wrecked on the Californian coast in 1889. Most of Collaroy’s development has occurred since the mid twentieth century. The area gained major media attention in 1999 when a giant squid washed up on the beach near the rock pool. The locals named the squid "Willy" and after much debate over what to do with the creature it was sold to the local fish and chip shop.
